'We once again demonstrated in 2009 that theCompany's high quality of medical care and restructuring experience make ita reliable partner for patients, employees as well as the State', saidWolfgang Pföhler, chairman of the Board of Management of RHÖN-KLINIKUM AG.He stated that the healthcare network had been expanded, and that with thecapital increase the basis for new growth had been created. Pföhler willalso inform that the Board member Ralf Stähler will leave the Company forpersonal reasons as of 30 April. Results for financial year 2009In 2009, a total of 1.8 million patients were treated in the Group'sfacilities. During the same period, revenues rose to 2.3 billion euros. Operating cash flow saw anincrease of 11.5 % to 238.5 million euros. The 9.2% rise in patient treatments was 'proof of the great trust in thequality of our work'. With growth in revenues of 8.9% and in earnings of7.4 % in 2009, the Group moreover demonstrated the sustainability of itsgrowth course - also in times of crisis. Pföhler gives assurance that this'reliable' course would also be 'steadfastly' maintained in the newfinancial year.'With the August 2009 capital increase in a gross volume of roughly 460million euros, we have created the ideal financial basis for expanding ourhealthcare network', explained Dr. Erik Hamann, CFO of RHÖN-KLINIKUM AG.Already at the end of 2009 with the takeover of the MEDIGREIF Group, theCompany expanded its healthcare network by 5 acute hospitals and 2 medicalcare centres (MVZs) in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. On 9 June 2010, the Board of Management and the Supervisory Board willpropose a dividend of EUR 0.30 per ordinary non-par share with dividendentitlement (DE 0007042301; 138,208,000 non-par shares). Without thecapital increase - based on the previous volume of shares in circulation -an amount of 0.40 euros per share would thus have been distributed(previous year: 0.35 euros).Jobs in 2009As at 31 December 2009, RHÖN-KLINIKUM AG employed a total of 36,882 peoplein ten federal states. With the acquisition of the MEDIGREIF Group, 1,421employees were added to the Group's hospital network. At our long-standingfacilities, 1,549 additional employees were hired. These notably includedoctors and nurses. In many regions, then, the hospitals are among thelargest employers. In north and central Hesse, for example, Gießen andMarburg University Hospital ranks second among private companies by numberof employees.Q1 2010 resultsThe Management is pleased with the start the Company has made intofinancial year 2010. 'We have got off to a solid start into the new year',emphasises Wolfgang Pföhler.Already in the first three months, the Group treated 509,793 patients (+12.7 %). Revenues rose to EUR 624.2 million (+ 11.6 %). Net consolidatedprofit rose 11.7% to reach EUR 34.3 million.EBITDA climbed to EUR 73.1 million (+ 9.1 %). EBIT stood at EUR 46.8million, which translates into a rise of 9.4% versus the previous year'slevel. As at 31 March 2010, the Group had 36,915 employees.'The good first-quarter figures provide an outstanding basis for reliablyreaching our forecast for full-year 2010', explains Dr. Erik Hamann, theCompany's CFO.Outlook for 2010: 'High-quality medical care at reasonable costs:strengthening co-operation models'Board of Management chairman Pföhler emphasises that the high quality ofmedical care was directly dependent on high investment capacity. 'In 2009we invested some 332.5 million euros, thus creating the basis today for thehealthcare we will provide tomorrow. In 2011, for example, the Gießen andMarburg University Hospital is not only getting ready to move intocentralised, modern new buildings but also to start up operations of thenew particle therapy facility. 'We invest not only in building structuresbut also in innovative medical care for people', Pföhler said. With theparticle therapy centre (PTC), Marburg was witnessing the creation of theworld's first centre making it possible to use protons and carbon ions withgreat precision in the effective treatment of cancer diseases at acompletely new level. 'In Marburg we are thus establishing a leadingradiation oncology site of international standing, and in the process arealso directly and indirectly creating about 200 jobs within the region'.Pföhler emphasises that public funding was becoming scarcer for healthcareas well. For this reason it was important to tap into further efficiencyand rationalisation reserves, since this was the only way to ensure medicalcare at a high level also in future. This also meant enabling a competitionfor the best solutions in healthcare delivery. This was the only way tofree innovation. Already two years ago the RHÖN-KLINIKUM Group, with itsinterfacility and cross-sector healthcare delivery approach, had developeda model for combining medical quality and economic efficiency for patients.RHÖN-KLINIKUM's CEO emphasises that the Company in many respects was ingood shape and highly innovative: 'Thanks to telemedicine we are able tobring good medical care to the regions and to the patients there, whootherwise might not at all be able to find such care at that level giventhe shortage of doctors', Pföhler explaines. With our web-based electronicpatient file, the Company had created a bridge of communication fordoctors, regardless of whether they work in a hospital, an MVZ or adoctor's practice.'Good medical care and economic efficiency go together. This is somethingwe have proven in 2009. And that is our commitment also in 2010', Pföhlerconcludes.RHÖN-KLINIKUM AG is one of the largest healthcare providers in Germany. Itscorporate objective is high-quality medical care for everyone. Currently, our Group counts 53 hospitals at 42 sites as well as 29 medical carecentres (MVZs) throughout Germany.
