RHÖN-KLINIKUM AG to Make Active Use in 2020 of Opportunities When Healthcare Market is Shaken Up

  • RHÖN-KLINIKUM AG possesses broad financial scope for acquisitions
  • Acquisition of specialist healthcare providers is also being considered
  • Focus on holding strategic interest in young innovative companies

RHÖN-KLINIKUM AG wishes to make active use in 2020 of opportunities which arise from excessive regulation particularly in the funding of medical care when the healthcare market is shaken up. Our Company is well prepared: “RHÖN-KLINIKUM AG has already adjusted its hospital portfolio contrary to its competitors. We only carry a small amount of debt and therefore possess a broad financial scope for making judicious acquisitions when suitable market opportunities arise. Our newly developed campus concept serves as a forward-looking, highly innovative prototype here: we are particularly interested in regions with a fragmented range of healthcare services which can be consolidated on a campus site,” stated Stephan Holzinger, RHÖN-KLINIKUM AG’s CEO and CFO. Our Company is also assessing the acquisition of specialist healthcare service providers in certain medical fields.

The board of management is currently focusing on further possibilities of holding an interest in young innovative companies as well as gradually increasing the range of telemedicine offered by the company jointly owned with Swiss telemedicine pioneer Medgate: “After founding the company, we then recruited the management team and are now extending the technical and logistical infrastructure as well as expanding sales activities. In the initial year 2020 we expect financial expenditure in a low single-digit million figure,” Stephan Holzinger stated. The investments in the new telemedicine business model are intended to augment RHÖN-KLINIKUM’s range of services in a positive manner and be an important contribution in the medium term to less dependency on the economic development of the core business with hospital services.

The programme of improvements which was initiated in 2017 is also being continued, which will now put the focus on the administrative structure of the corporate group and individual sites following the progress made in the area of avoiding losses which arise when the Medical Review Board of the Statutory Health Insurance Funds (Medizinischer Dienst der Krankenversicherungen – MDK) raises objections to hospital bills, for example. To this end we have commissioned an analysis and feasibility study which should show in the first six months of 2020 how more efficient administrative structures can make a positive contribution to earnings, thus helping to alleviate the heavy financial burdens from the regulation of medical care.

RHÖN‐KLINIKUM AG is one of the largest healthcare providers in Germany. The hospital group offers excellent medical care with a direct link to universities and research institutes. More than 850,000 patients are treated every year at the five group hospitals located in Bad Berka, Bad Neustadt, Frankfurt (Oder), Giessen and Marburg where more than 17,000 employees work. We have now put our ideal RHÖN healthcare campus concept into practice at our site in Bad Neustadt. It provides fully comprehensive forward-looking healthcare, thus crossing sectoral boundaries. The patient-orientated concept takes account of the increasing importance of out-patient medical services and raises modern healthcare in rural areas to a new level of excellence.
